Talawa wood is a beautiful type of wood for the aquarium. Talawa comes from Asia. Usually the pieces consist of a basic stump from which many branches arise. Unlike Spiderwood, for example, the branches of Talawa wood are much straighter in shape. This opens up new possibilities for other design forms in the aquarium.
The surface of Talawa wood is rough. This provides a good substrate for ferns and mosses to grow on. Sometimes pieces of bark are still present. Together with the knots, this is a very interesting type of wood. In an aquascape the pieces can be used to imitate a forest. The branches can be sawn off and placed upright, so that a row of trees can be made. More obvious is to use Talawa wood in a South America biotope aquarium. There, the wood can be used upright or upside down. For example for imitating mangrove roots. This creates numerous hiding places for, for example, discus fish or angelfish. Plecos and other catfish will feast on the cellulose from the surface. Talawa is also an excellent choice in a shrimp aquarium.
Besides the fact that the wood is very decorative, it can unfortunately give off some discolouration to the water. This is no problem in a biotope aquarium. In an aquascape, it is less desirable. Seachem Purigen can also be used here to clear the water. The release of tannins can also lower the pH.
It may take some time for the wood to become completely engorged with water and lose its buoyancy. Watering the wood is therefore strongly recommended, for example in a large barrel. In addition, a strong odor can be released and this water can be changed regularly. If necessary, the wood can be (temporarily) weighted by placing a stone on top. Securing to stones with sealant or tie-wraps also offers a solution. During the start-up phase, it is also possible that some slime/mold is released from the wood. That can't hurt, but we do recommend removing this as much as possible where possible. Don't let the above put you off too much, but go make something beautiful with it and enjoy!
Talawa wood is widely applicable. So it can also be used excellently in the terrarium. Both in a jungle terrarium and in a desert terrarium.
