Aquarium animals are without exception sensitive animals. Anyone who handles these animals should keep this in mind and handle them with care. But what should you pay attention to?
Snails and shrimp are packed by us in transport buckets. This contains the same water as the aquarium where the animals have spent a considerable time with us. They are used to this water. We have set the same temperature everywhere, perform the same maintenance and refresh with the same water. Despite this routine, there may be differences in the water parameters. That is why we pack each variety separately in its own bucket. We also add a plant to provide some support during the trip. To prevent a bucket from leaking, the bucket is packed in a bag. This is then packed in bubble wrap to limit temperature fluctuations. Is the outside temperature (night temperature) too low? Then nothing will be sent. Even if it is too hot, we postpone the transport until the temperatures are more favourable. In this way we do the maximum to ensure that the animals arrive alive.
Upon receipt of the animals, it is advisable to float the bucket, without a lid, in the aquarium as soon as possible. This allows the water in the bucket to take on the same temperature as that of the aquarium. The animals have spent some time in the dark. You can choose to turn off the light in the aquarium for a while. This reduces stress. This is also recommended with fluorescent lighting because of the heat development that can heat the water in the bucket too high.
Let the bucket float in the aquarium for fifteen minutes. After this we let the animals get acquainted with the new water of the aquarium. By gently pushing the bucket under the water a little bit, a little water can flow in. Add a little water to the bucket every 10 minutes. That way they can get used to it slowly.
1. Let the bucket float in the water for 15 minutes
2. Carefully push the bucket under water so that a very small amount of water (max. 20% extra) can flow in.
3. Repeat every 10 minutes
4. Catch the animals after an hour to an hour and a half
Always take the time to let the animals get used to it. If it goes too fast, the shock is all the greater. The risk of death of the animals is then greater. The following applies: Better too slow than too fast
TIP: Rinse the water from the bucket into the sink. The animals have provided the necessary waste during transport. We better not get this in the aquarium.
