Banana leaves can be used in the aquarium as an antibacterial, anti-parasitic and anti-fungal agent. It keeps the aquarium free of pathogens, resulting in healthier fish. In addition, just like Catappa leaves, they have a stress-reducing effect.
Various positive properties are attributed to the use of banana leaves. It lowers the pH of the water naturally. In many cases this is desirable, because fish often prefer an acidic environment. Shrimp and fish feel more at ease and will show more beautiful colors. When growing shrimp, the leaves have a positive effect on the breeding results. Due to the antifungal effect, eggs have less chance of becoming moldy. The breeding results are also better with Corydoras, Apistogramma, fighting fish and other egg-laying fish.
Under the leaves there is shelter for young or shy shrimps. Tanins are also released by the banana leaves. These give the water a brown tea color. The more leaves added to the aquarium, the darker the color will be. If the discoloration is undesirable, the leaves can be placed in a bowl of cold water for a day. The worst discoloration can then be removed in advance.
After 2-5 weeks the leaves will have decayed. Things go faster with shrimp or catfish in the aquarium. During this process, numerous microorganisms and infusoria become available as food for shrimp, snails and fish. The banana leaves can therefore also serve as a long-term food reserve. Decayed leaf debris can eventually be removed to prevent it from fouling the filter.
Use as many Banana Leaves as necessary. There is no maximum. Always keep an eye on the pH of the water, because it should not become too low. At first the leaves float and will sink within a few days.
