Sterculia pod
Per Unit
Sterculia pods are woody caps/pods of the Sterculia foetida tree. The tree grows in the jungles of Southeast Asia. As soon as the pods fall from the tree, they are collected. In the aquarium they can be used as a natural shelter. The size is about 10cm.
Fish such as dwarf cichlids need shelter. Using natural decorative materials is especially important when imitating a natural biotope. Botanicals such as Sterculia pods are ideal for this. Placing one or more Sterculia pods on the bottom creates a natural atmosphere and multiple hiding places.
In the shrimp aquarium, the pods can also serve as a pleasant hiding place. Shrimp can retreat and hide in the shade. The pods release substances into the water that calm fish and shrimp. Less stress will ensure better colors and better growing results. Numerous infusoria will live on the woody material. Shrimp and fish can eat this for a natural, healthy meal.
Like other botanicals for the aquarium, Sterculia pods also release tannins into the water. The release will be slow and over a long period of time. This can cause a tea-like color to appear in the water. Similar to a tea bag, the discoloring effect on botanicals will also slowly diminish.

- Sterculia pods are highly buoyant. After 1-2 days they will sink. To speed up the sinking, they can be boiled for an hour, maybe a little longer. This causes them to fill up with water more quickly.
