Taxiphyllum barbieri is a moss species that is very easy to keep in the aquarium. The moss comes from Asia and is therefore often referred to as Java moss. It grows up to 10cm thick and attaches to a variety of surfaces. Ideal for covering stones, back walls or driftwood.

Tie the Java moss to a surface with nylon thread or ADA Moss Cotton. Over time, the moss grows and spreads over the material. This type of moss has the property of being able to grow quite wild. Therefore, do not let it get to that point and prune it regularly to achieve the desired model. This will also make it grow more firmly and develop more in width.

Taxiphyllum barbieri is also very suitable for shrimp aquariums or breeding aquariums and offers an ideal shelter for small fish and shrimps.


Taxiphyllum barbieri, or Java moss, is ideal moss for covering decorative materials. Moss has a very decorative value that gives a natural impression to the aquarium. It is not without reason a favorite choice of Takashi Amano!
