Cyperus species occur worldwide in many tropical areas, but only a few species are suitable as underwater plants. Cyperus helferi comes from Thailand and is the first species to be used as an aquarium plant. The ribbon-shaped leaves are 20-35cm long and have a fresh green color.
This plant needs a relatively large amount of light and it is not necessary, but CO2 fertilization is beneficial for good growth. The plant will also develop healthily with a sufficient supply of Nitrate, Phosphate, Potassium and trace elements. The water should preferably not be warmer than 26 °C. The thin leaves sway easily in the current and provide a wonderfully soothing effect.
Propagation takes place by side shoots at the base. These can be cut off and replanted. Sometimes the plant forms flowers under water.
