Beard Algae and Brush Algae

Bearded algae and Brush algae that we encounter in the aquarium belong to the red algae. The color under water varies from dark green, gray and black. When these algae are placed in alcohol, they turn red. The name red algae is therefore easy to understand, but is it now Bearded Algae and Brush Algae? Dark fluff that clings to the edges of leaves (like a beard) or settles as small tufts on hardscapes, back walls and other things in the aquarium (where the tufts resemble a brush). This type of algae will also come in many subspecies and varieties, but as far as we are concerned we are talking about the same type of algae. All in all, not a pretty sight and also very difficult to get rid of.

The causes of Beard Algae or Brush Algae

Beard algae often occurs at times when a change has taken place in the CO2 level. For example when the CO2 bottle is empty. We often see this alga in places where there is a lot of current. For example, along the water surface near the filter outlet, leaves of Valisneria or Anubias are an ideal basis for a brush algae colony. Dust dirt easily gets stuck in the hairs. High organic loads due to frequent feeding or relatively many animals in the aquarium encourage algae development. Especially when this is accompanied by few water changes or the presence of mulm or a dirty filter.

If we see these algae in an aquarium without CO2, it may be because these algae are better able to extract carbon from the water than plants. They then get their carbon from bicarbonates. In this process called biogenic decalcification, the carbon and calcium carbonate are used by the algae to build their cells. The pH value in the aquarium will rise and less CO2 will be absorbed by aquarium plants. The absorption of the Calcium also makes the algae stronger and less interesting for algae-eating animals.

Fighting beard algae or brush algae

It is important to change water regularly at all times. The most important measure against Beard Algae: Make sure that the CO2 content is sufficient and stable. In addition, ensure good water circulation. Also, the amount of light above the aquarium must be in balance with the other nutrients. Also ensure an adequate plant food with both macro nutrients and trace elements and do not overfeed the fish.

Heavily infested leaves will need to be removed. Brush algae on stones can be treated with a "spot treatment" with EasyCarbo . An ADA Pro Picker or ADA Pro Brush can also help to loosen the algae.

But beware: Paintbrush algae are very tough algae and cannot be easily outdone. The effect of an adjustment in, for example, CO2 content can sometimes only be visible after 3 weeks. This makes it even more difficult to combat this algae. A good CO2 level, correct water circulation, adequate maintenance, correct plant nutrition and then a good dose of patience will ensure that the algae will disappear after a while.
