We all know oak leaf extract, but why not just use the natural product? Oak leaves have the property of lowering the pH of the aquarium water naturally, without causing strong discoloration of the water. The pH-lowering effect is much less strong compared to, for example, alder plugs.
In the rainforests of the Amazon region or the rivers and streams in Asia, many dead leaves fall into the water. The leaves release minerals, tannic acids and humic substances into the water, reducing the pH and hardness. Oak leaves are a particularly suitable tool to simulate these natural conditions in the aquarium. Microbiological life is stimulated by the decay of the leaves. This improves the natural, biological balance!
A layer of leaf litter provides countless hiding places for fish and shrimp. Fish feel at home among the fallen leaves and corydoras and dwarf cichlids in particular like to hide under the leaves and this can improve breeding results. The oak leaves last a long time in the aquarium. Vegetable-eating fish or other animals like to eat the oak leaves and this is a good change from a varied diet.
Shrimp also love it because of the many microscopic foods it contains! Oak leaves also contain substances that help shrimp molt and substances that prevent algae growth. The decorative value in biotope aquariums makes this product a highly underestimated natural product!

The leaves are dried and sink after 1 to 2 days. This process can be accelerated by soaking the leaves in hot water. After about 2 months they have worn off, but can be left for decoration.
