Behavior in the aquarium
The Posthorn snail is a nice resident for almost every community aquarium. It also comes into its own in a shrimp aquarium. Planorbella duryi does an excellent job when it comes to cleaning up uneaten fish food, dead or dying plant debris, debris or algae growth on hard surfaces. Young animals can be seen how they digest their food, because their houses are still thin and transparent. As they get older, the color of the house will become more intense. It is also nice that they often eat together. When one snail has found food, it won't be long before the rest arrive. These snails are quite easy to care for and suitable for beginners.

Water quality
Planorbella duryi prefers somewhat harder, slightly alkaline water. Soft, acidic water will have a bad effect on their home. They do less well on high values of nitrate, nitrite, metals and medicine residues. Also avoid fluctuations in the water as much as possible. Good water parameters are a pH of 7.0-7.5 and a hardness of 10-20 dGH. An optimum temperature is between 18-25°C.

Nutrition
In the aquarium they will feed on all kinds of plant material (algae, dead plant remains, etc.), but dead animals will also be eaten. Excess fish food from flakes and food tablets is also eaten. They are real cleaners. They will look for food in all corners of the aquarium. In addition, the window is regularly grazed, so that these animals prove to be a great help in aquarium maintenance. Calcium rich food is recommended for a good development of the house.

Extra information
Blue posthorn snails have adapted to survive in muddy, turbid water with low oxygen content. They can breathe air and store it in their house to stay underwater for a long time. This species lays eggs in a clump of gel. The eggs hatch in freshwater, which makes breeding in the aquarium relatively easy.

Planorbella duryi are fun, active aquarium snails that are always looking for food!
