Phosphate is an end product from the breakdown of organic substances such as food residues, fish faeces, etc. In high concentrations, this can cause the growth of algae. Phosphate is also an important nutrient source for aquarium plants. However, it is preferable to keep the PO4 value in the aquarium as low as possible. Values up to 0.5 mg/l are acceptable. Use this phosphate test regularly to gain insight into the processes in the aquarium.
Pay attention! Phosphate tends to form heavily soluble salts which precipitate on the bottom along with the sludge. So regularly remove the sludge from the bottom.

A high phosphorus value in the aquarium does not necessarily have to be a problem. As mentioned, phosphate is an important food for plants. In an aquascape with many plants and relatively few fish/waste materials, there is naturally little phosphate in the water. In such a situation it may even make sense to add phosphate.
If more phosphate is present than the plants can absorb and there is therefore an incorrect balance in the aquatic environment, the phosphate value can be reduced in the following way:
- feed less
- change more water
- remove dirt from the bottom and the filter
- keep fewer animals in the aquarium
- place more (fast-growing) plants in the aquarium
