Switching to LED lighting for the aquarium

There are still many people skeptical about LED lighting, but that is not of this time anymore. Many experiences are based on old technology, but the LED technology has in recent years made good progress. It is true that many manufacturers, the demand for LED lighting to grow and to capitalize on the ignorance of the consumer. This unfortunately there are many products on the market that promises not to deliver.

"With an investment for more than 10 years, it is important to understand what you buy"

It also has a fair time before LED lighting came on the market that actually saving energy, sufficient light intensity and good light spectrum with aquarium plants grow well. If you switch to LED lighting for your aquarium, then it is Daytime LED lights, the sustainable solution with an incredible return of up to 120 Lumens per Watt, excellent color rendering and a lifespan of 60,000 hours! Compare that with other LED lighting. Also the many possibilities for the lighting above the aquarium to bring are diverse. Because there are so many possibilities with the Daytime LED lights, you will find here examples to Daytime lighting. By going through a number of steps, it is clearer to make the right choice for your aquarium. Please feel free to contact with questions or for advice for other possibilities.

The advice for the following aquariums will be based on personal preference and experience. As a big proponent of a lot of lighting, it is in practice quite difficult to have too much light above the aquarium. For a planted aquarium, the plants, the general impression of the aquarium (and not the fish), I go from 30-40 Lumen Daytime lighting per Litre. Daytime writing for: Normal light requirements (= 20-30 Lumen per Litre. High light requirements (= 30 or more Lumen per litre. Dimming can of course always still.

Why a lot of lighting above the aquarium?
- Plants grow more compact with shorter internodes
- Leaves of plants stay smaller, which improves the optical scale in the layout
- Red plants colors redder
- More difficult species often have a need for high light intensity
- Bottom of stengelplanten is not so fast bare
And perhaps 1 of the most important:
An aquarium which is well lit, makes a fresher impression and has a lot more look to the room in which he stands. A dark aquarium may be attractive, but does not appeal as a well-lit aquarium that has. Because say for yourself now: you enjoy yet more of the natural life in the garden on a bright summer's day, than on a dull cloudy day?

Disadvantage of a lot of lighting above the aquarium:
- High demand of aquarium plants to CO2
- More demand of the aquarium plants to nutrients
- More likely to have algae, because there is rather a lack of power supply arises in the aquarium plants
- More power consumption, more heat generation

The growth of plants is not always faster in a lot of lighting. Often I read about some aquariums "the plants grow the plants the bake off" and I wonder if or who do not plant much too fast for the light to grow. Underside of the stengelplanten are bare and the plants have long internodes, because the light intensity is insufficient in the aquarium. In a poorly lit aquarium, they want to indeed be very fast to the light to grow. Also, we should not forget that we are in the aquarium, no production have to be run with a such a large potential yield, for example, fruit growers is the case. An aquarium do you have for the ornamental and aquarium plants, therefore, "beautiful" or "good," to grow and not necessarily "fast". The visual aspect is, after all, our main point of attention!
Daytime provides relief in this area is an excellent CRI (Color Rendering Index) and a good spectrum in which the plants are good to grow.

The light output is dependent on the light intensity and is normally a continuous period of 8-10 hours with full power is desirable. If the aquarium is running properly and the can, light can even be increased to 12 hours. How is it in the nature? Around the equator (where most aquarium plants come from) the sun in no time at full strength and at sunset, in a very short time in the dark. The day length lasts about 12 hours and the sun is not in the interim just around the corner, as some people are simulated by a break in the light emission duration in welding.

How many LED units are needed? Given the angle of 120 degrees, and if the intention is that aquarium plants at the back also well illuminated in the peaks, 2 units recommended from about 45 cm aquariumbreedte.

Juwel Vision 260 ⇩

Step 1: How much LED lighting, there is needed above an aquarium type Juwel Vision 260?
Virtually all plant species can hold, we go from a required amount of light of 30-40 Lumens per liter. For a tank of 260 Litre is between the 7800 and 10400 Lumens in total.

Step 2: How can we get this?
For Juwel aquariums offers Daytime appropriate adapter profiles(view). In this adapter profiles the LED unit to be pushed. The existing batten with T5 or T8 lighting to the attic and the existing klepdeksels can continue to be used. The LED unit hangs so nicely in the middle of the aquarium and there is more space in the light cover, because the FLUORESCENT batten luminaires no longer in the way. With the existing klepdeksels it is, moreover, beautifully finished!

Step 3: What are the LED units are eligible?
In the Daytime adapter profile for a Juwel Vision will fit an LED unit of 120cm. We choose for the implementation Eco120.3 (with 3 LED rows), then the total number of Lumens 6840 (=25 Lumens per liter), we Choose for the implementation Cluster120.6 (6 LED modules), then it is a total of 7200 Lumens (=28 Lumens per liter) In this case I am speaking of an average amount of illumination, which is adequate in most cases. In the case of the cluster120.6 can we, after deduction of the existing content with soil hardscape, etc. the 30 Lumens per liter.

Advice for a Juwel Vision 260 aquascape/community
The most beautiful is the version with the Juwel adapter profile icm the cluster120.6. With 28 Lumens per litre, there is sufficient light present, and the finishing is perfect! The requirements for such an arrangement are:
1x Daytime cluster 120.6
1x Daytime adapterprofiel Juwel 120
1x Daytime 12V dc power adapter 60Watt

Step 4: you need to set the lighting to dim or lighting effects for the sunset to happen?
To the LED unit to dimming can be selected for a dimmer or LED computer.
1-channel dimmer: manually be dimmed and there is sunrise as possible (note: no sunset).
1-channel Lighting Control: automatic control with lighting effects such as sunrise and sunset, clouds, dusk, electrical storm.
3-channel Lighting Control: Equal to 1 channel, but icm 3-channel CONTROL Cluster modules is also the color of the light to fit. For example, morning red, evening red and moonlights. In this case, choose for the CONTROL Ultra Blue Red White.
LED computer: This is the intensity of the light on every minute of the day (possibly per channel=CONTROL). Multiple programs possible.

Juwel Vision 450 ⇩

Step 1: How much LED lighting, there is needed above an aquarium type Juwel Vision 450?
Virtually all plant species can hold, we go from a required amount of light of 30-40 Lumens per liter. For an aquarium of 450 Liters is between 13500 and 18000 Lumens in total.

In the Daytime adapter profile for a Juwel Vision will fit an LED unit of 150cm. There can then be selected:
Option Eco:
2x Daytime eco150.3 (=36 Lumens per liter)
2x Daytime adapterprofiel Juwel 150
2x Daytime 12V adapter, 80Watt

Option Cluster A:
2x Daytime cluster150.7 (a total of 14 LED modules =37 Lumens per liter)
2x Daytime adapterprofiel Juwel 150
2x Daytime 12V adapter, 80Watt

Option Cluster B:
2x Daytime cluster150.6 (a total of 12 LED modules =32 Lumens per liter)
2x Daytime adapterprofiel Juwel 150
2x Daytime 12V dc power adapter 60Watt

Advice for a Juwel Vision 450 aquascape/community
Price is the Cluster Option B is the best, because of the 60W adapters.

Aquarium of 160cm ⇩

Step 1: How many LED lights there is need above a tank of 160cm?
To begin, we must ensure that there is sufficient light above the aquarium present. With Daytime LED lights and an aquarium where all sorts of plants can be held (so the more difficult species), we assume a required amount of light of 30-40 Lumens per liter. CO2 fertilization is with this amount of light is indispensable, as well as a tuned dosage of plant food.

For a tank of 460 Liter is between 13800 and 18400 Lumens in total. In a Special aquarium is half enough, but in order to achieve the desired effect I recommend a dimmer to use.

Step 2: How can we get this?
Replacement of T5 or T8 lighting, Daytime LED units in the existing holders are to be placed. It is also possible to universeelbeugels or screw-on brackets to use.

Step 3: What are the LED units are eligible?
If no holders are present in the light cover, the opschroefmontage be chosen and fit, there are probably units of 150cm.

Option eco:
We choose for the implementation Eco150.3 (with 3 LED rows), then the total number of Lumen 8160 (=18 Lumens per liter). This would then be 2 units are required for a total of 36 Lumens per liter to obtain. The aquarium Is 60cm wide, it is also to consider three times Eco150.2 (with 2 LED rows). This is the light better on the surface divided, and the total number of Lumens on 16200 (= 36 Lumens per Liter).

Option cluster:
We choose for the implementation Cluster150.7 (with 7 LED modules), total of 8400 Lumens (=18 Lumens per liter)
Also this would be two units are needed with a total of 14 LED modules for a total of 36 Lumens per liter to obtain. To the light output across the surface of the aquarium to divide can also be chosen for three cluster units 150.5 or two units with 150.4 and 150.5. Other variations/combinations are possible of course.

Step 4: the LED lights or lighting effects for the sunset to happen?
To the LED unit to dimming can be selected for a dimmer. In particular, in South America specially in the aquaria, this can be the desired atmosphere. With the 1-channel dimmer-light can be manually dimmed, and there is sunrise as possible (note: no sunset). With the 1-channel Lighting Control unit is the light programming and light effects sunrise and sunset, clouds, dusk, thunderstorm and night lighting.

To change the color of the light can be used to set, should be chosen for the Daytime cluster CONTROL. This has 3 colours of LEDS which are driven via 3 separate channels. The color to be set manually can be chosen for the 3-channel dimmer (with sunrise, not sunset). To the colors of the light and automatically set, can be selected for the 3-channel Lighting Control. This lighting effects sunrise and sunset, clouds, dusk, thunderstorm and night, but also the color of the light is to be programmed. For example, morning red, evening red and moonlights. In this case, choose for the CONTROL Ultra Blue Red White.

The advice for LED lighting over an aquarium 160cm
The best result will probably be with 3 LED units. In the case of a special aquarium in South America, is the cluster variant is very suitable. The cluster modules give a stylish spotlight effect. In total, there are between 10 and 16 cluster modules is needed that could be shared about the 2 or 3 LED units. It is well to observe that at a LED unit 150.4 more than 30cm between the LED modules. It is therefore advisable to go for something more modules to choose, so the distance are not too large. If the light output too high for the atmosphere that needs to be reached, there may be (later) a dim module between be placed.

For an aquarium 160x60x50cm (LxDxH):
3x Daytime cluster 150.5
3x Daytime 12V dc power adapter 60Watt (to the LED unit to provide power)
3x ?? assembly

For an aquarium 160x50x60cm (LxDxH):
2x Daytime cluster 150.7
2x Daytime 12V adapter, 80Watt (to the LED unit to provide power)
2x ?? assembly

Optional:
manual 1-channel dim module (€ 129,90) or programmable 1-channel Lighting Control (€ 259,90)
in the case for the setting of the light colour --> cluster CONTROL with manual 3-channel dim module (€ 159,90) or programmable 3-channel Lighting Control (€ 299,90)

Juwel Trigon 190 ⇩

Step 1: How much LED lighting, there is needed above an aquarium type Juwel Trigon 190?
To begin, we must ensure that there is sufficient light above the aquarium present. With Daytime LED lights and an aquarium where all sorts of plants can be held (so the more difficult species), we assume a required amount of light of 30-40 Lumens per liter. CO2 fertilization is with this amount of light is indispensable, as well as a tuned dosage of plant food. For a tank of 190 Litres is between the 5700 and 7600 Lumens in total.

Step 2: How can we get this?
For Juwel aquariums offers Daytime appropriate adapter profiles.
For the Juwel Trigon 190 fits a Daytime adapter profile 70.

Step 3: What are the LED units are eligible?
In the Daytime adapter profile for a Juwel Vision will fit an LED unit of 70cm. We choose for the implementation Cluster70.4 (4 LED modules), then it is a total of 4800 Lumens (=25 Lumens per liter) In this case, I speak of a moderate to average amount of lighting, which in my opinion is not enough for the grow demanding plant species, but sufficient, for example, a South America biotope, Cichlids aquarium.

Step 4: Are there other options for the amount of light?
Also can be chosen to be the existing T5 holders to use a Daytime LED unit in place. In the light cover is place for 2x a Daytime type of "eco60.3" or "cluster70.3" unit to replace the 28W T5 (590mm) lighting. 2x Daytime eco60.3 (with 3 LED rows), provides a total Lumen number of 5760 (=31 Lumens per liter). In the case of the Cluster execution can be 2x Daytime cluster 70.3 (3 LED modules) are chosen and then the total number of Lumens 7200 (=38 Lumens per liter).
By making use of 2 units, can be chosen to be both separate from each other on a timer to turn it on. To do this, 2x 12V adapters needed of 36 Watts. Also can be chosen to be two units on 1 power supply switch by use of a 60Watt adapter icm a 3-way distributor. This 2nd option has the advantage if use is made of a Dim modules, as it allows the two units 1 dim module to send.

Step 5a: you need to set the lighting to dim or lighting effects for the sunset to happen?
To the LED unit to dimming can be selected for a dimmer. With the 1-channel dimmer - light can be manually dimmed, and there is sunrise as possible (note: no sunset). With the 1-channel Lighting Control unit is the light programming and light effects as sunrise and sunset, clouds, dusk, thunderstorm and night lighting.(Note: setting the colour of light is not possible)

Step 5b: it Is necessary to change the color of the light to change?
To change the color of the light can be used to set, must be chosen for the Daytime cluster CONTROL. This features 3 colors/groups of LEDS that are controlled via 3 separate channels.

Advice for a Juwel Trigon 190 aquascape/community
The best solution is the implementation with the Juwel adapter profile icm the cluster70.4. With 25 Lumens per litre, however, there is insufficient light present.
For that reason, I would advise to choose for 2x cluster70.3 icm T5 fitting.

The requirements for such an arrangement are:
Option 1: (units separately, turn on 2 timers)
2x Daytime cluster 70.3 (ultra white or neutral white or combination)
2x Daytime cluster T5 fitting
2x Daytime 12V adapter 36Watt (both LED units separately to provide power)

Or option 2: (units jointly switch on 1 timer icm Dim module/Lighting Control)
2x Daytime cluster 70.3 (ultra white or neutral white or combination)
2x Daytime cluster T5 fitting
1x
Daytime 12V dc power adapter 60Watt (1 plug)
1x Daytime 3-way distributor (for up to 3 LED units to be connected to one 12V adapter)

Optional:
manual 1-channel dim module or programmable 1-channel Lighting Control
in the case for the setting of the light colour: choose cluster, CONTROL icm manual 3-channel dim module, or a programmable 3-channel Lighting Control.

Juwel Rio 180 ⇩

Step 1: How much LED lighting, there is needed above an aquarium type Juwel Rio180?
To begin, we must determine how much light is needed above the aquarium. If the intention is that sufficient light is available (also more difficult to keep species of plant), than I would advise a light intensity between 30 and 40 Lumens per liter. Adding CO2 is definitely essential, but a logical step to use the plants in optimal conditions to take care of. Important is also a balanced amount of plant food.
For a Juwel Rio 180 with 180 Litres of water is there between the 5400 and 7200 Lumens needed.
Also, in the case of a special aquarium with South America biotope or Malawi or Tanganyika biotope, I would this amount of advise, but to make use of a dim option. Therefore, the amount of light to be tailored to the taste and atmosphere that the aquarium should reflect this.

Step 2: How can we get this?
For Juwel aquariums offers Daytime especially appropriate adapter profiles. In this adapter profiles the LED unit to be pushed. The existing T8 or T5 light box can to the attic and the existing valve cover can continue to be used. The LED unit hangs so nicely in the middle of the aquarium and there is more space in the light cover, because there is no lighting kit more in the way. By the use of the existing klepdeksels, the whole very neatly finished!
For the Juwel Rio 180 fits a Daytime adapter profile 100.

Step 3: What are the LED units are eligible?
In the Daytime adapter profile for the Juwel Rio180 fit a LED unit of 100cm.
We opt for the eco execution, the eco100.3 LED unit. With 3 LED rows provides the eco100.3 a total of 5400 Lumens. (=30 Lumens per liter).
We choose for the cluster implementation, the cluster100.5 LED unit. With 5 cluster of modules provides the cluster100.5 a total of 6000 Lumens. (34 Lumens per liter).
(Also the color of the light to fit there is the cluster CONTROL. See below for more)

Step 4: Is the desired lights or lighting effects to achieve it?
To the LED dimming are several possibilities:
1-channel dim module: This is sunrise as possible (no sunset), and the intensity is manually set.
1-channel Lighting Control: Allows many lighting effects to be programmed (no colour), such as sunrise, sunset, thunderstorm, wolkensimulaties, twilight, etc.
Adjusting the light colour is only possible with Cluster CONTROL units. These are made up of 3 types of LED's and by 3 channels individually switch the intensity between them.
3-channel dim module:
This is sunrise as possible (no sunset), and the intensity is manually set. Also, because of the 3 knobs as possible to the colour mixing of 3 separate channels.
3-channel Lighting Control: Allows the LED unit fully programmable. The colour of the light, but also effects as ochtendrood, moonlight, clouds, thunderstorm, twilight, sunrise, sunset etc.

Advice for a Juwel Rio 180 aquascape/community
The version with the Daytime Adapter profile 100 ensures that the unit is nicely finished. The eco or cluster execution is a bit of a taste issue. Because the cluster100.5 more light output and delivers about the same width, this seems like a better choice.
The supplies are then:
1x Daytime cluster100.5 (Neutral White or Ultra White or combination)
1x Daytime adapterprofiel Juwel100
1x Daytime 12V dc power adapter 60Watt

Optional: Manual 1-channel dim module, or a fully programmable 1-channel Lighting Control.

Advice for a Juwel Rio 180 special aquarium / biotope aquarium
The version with the Daytime Adapter profile 100 ensures that the unit is nicely finished. The cluster CONTROL 100.5 delivers enough light output and the light color can be adjusted to taste.
The supplies are then:
1x Daytime cluster CONTROL 100.5
1x Daytime adapterprofiel Juwel100
1x Daytime 12V dc power adapter 60Watt

Select for manual 3-channel dim module, or a programmable 3-channel Lighting Control.
